Verizon has selected five companies to participate in an innovation incubator program that seeks to build, test and refine wireless devices for use in public safety communications.
The first cohort of the 5G First Responder Lab comprises Adcor Magnetic, Aerial Applications, Blueforce Development, Kiana Analytics and Qwake Technologies, Verizon said Wednesday.
These initial participants were chosen out of 50 applicants based on their abilities to address the program's response, recovery, readiness and rebuilding focus areas.
Verizon noted it will offer each three-month cohort access to the telecommunications firm's new lab and 5G network. All participants will have a chance to work with Verizon and Responder Corp to test use cases, generate insights and explore go-to-market approaches.

Nick Nilan, director of public sector product development, Verizon, cited the "transformative" potential of 5G technology and said he believes lab participants could introduce "life-saving" public safety innovations.
Interested firms can apply for the incubator's second cohort through April 5.
