Ashley Llorens: Johns Hopkins APL Seeks to Help DoD Explore AI Advantages, Risks - top government contractors - best government contracting event

Ashley Llorens, chief of the Intelligent Systems Center at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, has been appointed to three new panels that will work to guide the Department of Defense in the application and deterrence of artificial intelligence-based technology platforms.

He said in a statement published Friday that his appointments to the advisory boards will provide APL more opportunities to connect with both the government and industry to utilize AI in future national security efforts.

The Center for a New American Security selected Llorens to join former senior government officials, industry leaders and academic experts to establish the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and National Security.

Llorens is also member of the Defense Science Board’s new Task Force on Counter Autonomy, which aims to analyze how autonomous technology can aid the U.S. military across the domains of land, sea, undersea, air, space and cyberspace.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy is exploring how it could take advantage of the advances in AI. The service recently formed a committee to examine how naval forces can tackle adversarial efforts to deny and degrade mission-critical data.

Llorens is serving the committee to advise senior Navy officials.

“While APL continues to research, develop and deploy AI capabilities, it’s important to have a seat at these tables to listen and to tell,” Llorens said. “This enables us to have a broader impact on where the nation is headed.”
