Amazon and the National Science Foundation have pledged to invest $10M each in artificial intelligence research grants over a three-year period.
Prem Natarajan, vice president of natural understanding in Amazon's Alexa AI group, wrote in a blog entry posted Monday the partnership aims to encourage collaboration between industry and academia to explore approaches to address fairness, transparency and accountability challenges associated with the adoption of AI technology.
The company seeks to prevent biases from being present in AI systems and in turn maintain customer trust.
Topics under the program include transparency, explainability, accountability, potential adverse biases, mitigation strategies, validation of fairness and considerations of inclusivity.
NSF will independentl determine awards in accordance with the agency's merit review process.
