The U.S. Postal Service is seeking market information about autonomous vehicle technologies that the agency could use on its fleet of delivery vans.
The USPS said Friday in a FedBizOpps notice that it is looking into the possibility of fielding delivery vehicles that can safely drive themselves along a postal route while an operator sorts mail onboard.
To this end, the postal service has asked industry partners to provide feedback about different kinds of sensor solutions, such as lidar and radar, available on the market. The agency is also requesting information from companies with the ability to develop, test and integrate autonomous driving technologies.
Interested parties have until April 5 to respond to the RFI. Although the USPS does not yet intend to issue any contracts, the service may use the responses as a basis for developing a future solicitation.
