Saab has secured a potential three-year, $41.3M framework agreement with the U.S. Army to supply man-portable, multirole rifle systems designed for dismounted infantry.

The company said Tuesday it received a $19M initial order to deliver 84mm Carl-Gustaf M4 recoilless rifles to the military service this year.

Erik Smith, president and CEO of Saab's U.S. subsidiary, said the weapon is slated for distribution to the U.S. Marine Corps and light infantry teams that operate in various theaters of operations.

The company designed its M4 weapon to be compatible with multiple ammunition types and reduced the system's launcher weight from 22 pounds to less than 15 pounds.

The U.S. military designated the technology as M3E1.
