Raytheon has developed a radar technology designed to help U.S. Navy commading officers identify multiple threats at long distances when they perform missions at sea.
AN/SPY-6(V)1 air and missile defense radars are currently in production at a company facility in Andover, Mass., and intended for deployment on the military service’s DDG 51 Flight III destroyer ships, Raytheon said Wednesday.
The technology surpassed all performance requirements during a recent test at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii.
The Navy intends to deploy SPY-6(V)2 enterprise air surveillance radars on aircraft carriers and amphibious ships. The variant is scheduled to undergo system-level tests in Wallops Island, Va., this year.
“If you don’t have enough time to react, then suddenly, the threat is upon you and it’s a scramble,†said Scott Spence, director of naval radar systems at Raytheon.
“SPY-6 helps extend reaction time, which is critical, as every second counts.â€
