Mitre has obtained a U.S. patent for an antenna and ground plane technology designed to suppress back radiation from GPS antennas installed on aircraft platforms.
The nonprofit company said Tuesday the electro-textile ground plane will work to help military and civilian operators collect GPS data and avoid diffraction effects that may result in pattern distortions and affect the accuracy of Global Navigation Satellite System measurements.
Eddie Rosario, a Mitre prototype designer, invented the technology with Basrur Bama Rao, who retired from the organization several years ago.
Their invention serves as the nonprofit’s 200th patent.
“Our goal is to create impact with our intellectual property—that is, to develop applied technology and get it into the hands of our sponsors and stakeholders so that, ultimately, our technology leads to a safer world,†said Barry Costa, director of partnerships and the technology transfer office at Mitre.
