KBR's government services unit has secured a potential five-year, $19M contract from the U.S. Geological Survey to support flight operations of an Earth observation satellite built to capture space-based photos of the planet's land surface and collect data for global efforts to reduce hunger.

KBRWyle will help maintain, test and sustain the Landsat 7 spacecraft and payload, as well as manage the satellite's mission operations center ground systems and backup MOC, the company said Thursday.

The Landsat program is a collaboration of USGS and NASA. Work will take place at the Goddard Space Flight Center and at an agency office in Columbia, Md.

The firm-fixed-price, time and materials contract has one base year and four option years.

KBRWyle personnel help USGS manage a ground processing system for the Landsat 7 and 8 satellites at USGS' Earth Resources Observation and Science Center. The business also supports development of ground infrastructure for the Landsat 9, scheduled to launch next year.
