The Department of Transportation has issued a solicitation for the first phase of its fiscal year 2019 Small Business Innovation Research program that will fund small businesses developing and commercializing new technologies.

The DOT said in a FedBizOpps notice issued Tuesday that phase I will seek research ideas in 12 areas, including automation, condition monitoring of traction motors, concrete bridge deck assessment, highway alert system, blockchain, vehicle communication and sensors.

SBIR will have three phases representing each stage in development until commercial production. The department expects to grant $150K to $2M for each contract.

Phase I will focus on feasibility-related experimental or theoretical research, followed by research and development efforts and commercialization in phase II and III, respectively.

The DOT plans to host a pre-offer webinar on Feb. 27 to discuss the SBIR process and solicitation topics with small businesses interested in the solicitation.

Interested parties have until April 22 to submit proposals.
