Technica and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory have teamed up to build an artificial intelligence-based fog computing platform under a three-year, $1M research and development agreement.
The company said Tuesday it will work to develop the SmartFog technology designed to extract and integrate data from smart edge devices into a common system as part of the Army’s  Distributed Processing in Heterogeneous Tactical Environment program.
SmartFog uses machine learning and distributed processing methods to gather, correlate and assess information in areas where power and bandwith are limited.
“Managing the massive amounts of data from the internet of things sensors and devices on the battlefield and making sense of that information can be time-consuming, said Doug Sickler, vice president of business development at Technica.
Sickler added that SmartFog is designed to help commanders “cut through the noise on the battlefield to make more informed decisions regardless of environmental challenges.”
Technica expects the platform to eventually support the development of AI tools that could integrate internet of things into the battlefield.
