The Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command has awarded funding to Advanced Technology International for the first prototype work under the U.S. Navy's Information Warfare Research Project.

The Navy said Tuesday SPAWAR released $1.3M in funding through an other transaction agreement to build a prototype of a Low Altitude Range Communication System for the Marine Corps.

The new system will replace the service’s existing LARCS to meet new requirements for critical communications at Marine training ranges.

Erik Gardner, head of Expeditionary Enterprise Systems and Services division, said IWRP serves as a critical tool to enable the military to rapidly respond to emerging business information technology and warfighter needs.

ATI will work on the LARCS prototype with Booz Allen Hamilton and Intuitive Research Technology Corp. and the team is expected to complete the project within 10 months.

The team plans to test the new system at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina.
