The Social Security Administration is seeking vendors that could provide a tokenization platform for the agency to replace SS and beneficiary notice control numbers on mailed letters.

SSA intends to procure a tool that will work to generate nearly 1.4K tokens per second and provide a different token for every mail released by the agency, even those sent to the same person, according to a solicitation notice posted Friday on FedBizOpps.

The system should convert the nine-digit number into random characters that officials can only decode to protect citizens from identity theft and fraud.

A selected vendor must provide software patches and updates following the launch of the system. Interested parties have until Feb. 1 to submit proposals to the agency.

Nextgov reported Wednesday law mandates that federal agencies stop printing SSNs on government mails by 2022.
