Siemens and three Department of Energy-funded national laboratories have entered into a memorandum of understanding to explore hardware and software platforms that can help update and secure the U.S. electric grid system.
DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory as well as Oak Ridge and Pacific Northwest national labs will conduct joint R&D efforts with the company under a five-year MoU announced during the Innovation XLab Grid Modernization Summit in Seattle, Siemens said Thursday.
The agreement creates a framework for researchers to exchange data and resources and for a potential collaboration to develop systems to equip the country's electric grid with power electronics.
Siemens noted it will provide a Software Defined Inverter for testing and validation at specialized grid facilities located within the three DOE labs.If validated, the SDI technology has potential to aid modernization and security of microgrids and energy storage platforms, the company added.
The MoU includes provisions that would renew or extend the project.
