Rick Ambrose, executive vice president of Lockheed Martin's space business and a 2019 Wash100 winner, said in a video interview aired Tuesday he predicts NASA will send humans back to the moon via a lunar gateway within the next decade.
He told Yahoo Finance's Andy Serwer at the annual World Economic Forum that the Trump administration is committed to supporting the establishment of a “lunar economy†and created a policy for the space agency's mission to return to the moon.
Ambrose added that Lockheed values collaboration and multinational participation in the complex space industry.
“We love the fact that so many people are interested in space. It’s driving a tremendous, fast-paced innovation cycle that we can move forward with,†he said.
"We also invest where we see startups that have promising potential, such as Rocket Lab, which is a small launch vehicle, and Terran Orbital, which is a small satellite provider."
The Bethesda, Md.-based company's space programs account for 20 percent of the company’s portfolio with nearly 18K of its personnel working on satellite projects, according to Ambrose.
