Leonardo DRS has agreed with General Electric to extend their collaboration on the development and delivery of the LM2500 gas turbine for the U.S. Navy.

The Arlington, Va.-based defense contractor said Wednesday it will continue work on the program through 2024 under a strategic agreement with GE.

The two companies entered into the partnership in 2011 to offer products to the U.S. military.

Leonardo mainly provides design and procurement expertise and manufacturing, parts and delivery services for the development of the LM2500, LM2500+ and LM2500+G4 gas turbines.

“The long-term partnership between GE and Leonardo DRS has provided our U.S. Navy customer with high-quality gas turbine package systems giving the needed power and propulsion for our country’s naval fleet,” said Greg Reed, senior director business development of the DRS Naval Power Systems Group.

Under the new agreement, the two companies added an option to extend the LM2500 partnership through 2029.
