Huntington Ingalls Industries has selected 31 schools and academic entities in Alabama and Mississippi to receive grants worth $99,783 combined through a program that aims to help expand students' interest in science, technology, engineering and math subjects.

HII said Friday its Ingalls Shipbuilding division will sponsor a wide range of STEM projects in the Gulf Coast region covering subjects such as robotics, virtual reality and renewable energy as part of this year’s grant program.

“STEM fields have a critical importance not only to our workforce, but to our everyday lives," said Edmond Hughes, vice president of human resources and administration at Ingalls Shipbuilding.

Hughes added the company is committed to supporting the development of future workforce as those areas become more relevant to industry.

HII has provided more than $1M in grant funds to STEM projects since 2008.
