The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are seeking access to SpaceX‘s South Texas facility for surveying purposes, The Herald reported Wednesday.
James Gleeson, SpaceX spokesperson, said in a statement that the department intends to conduct a survey within the site, a facility that would launch transport rockets to Mars in the future.
“At this time, SpaceX is evaluating the request and is in communication with DHS to further understand their plans,” he said.
CBP intends to build more border wall infrastructure near the area, but the potential survey’s purpose has not yet been disclosed.
The report noted that Gleeson has not expounded on exchanges between SpaceX and the government regarding the request.
