Lockheed Martin has announced plans to relocate portions of the manufacturing process for the U.S. Navy‘s Fleet Ballistic Missile program to a company-operated facility in Jefferson County, Colo.
The company said Friday it will open up to 550 job opportunities within the county to support engineering, project management and business operations.
Jefferson County Economic Development Corp. helped the local government pursue Lockheed’s expansion project.
Eric Scherff, vice president of Navy strategic programs at Lockheed, said the FBM program is a key component of the country’s deterrence strategy.
The company has helped the service branch build and sustain submarine-launched ballistic missiles, including the Trident II D5 system, through the program.
Lockheed launched its operations in the county in 1955 to accommodate U.S. Air Force‘s request for the construction of an inland rocket facility.
