Harris has launched its first small satellite through a medium-lift launch vehicle developed by the India’s space research organization.

The Harris Satellite is built to operate in low Earth orbit and seeks to address military and commercial communications requirements, the company said Thursday.

The 6U cubesat uses a mission architecture designed for post-launch reconfiguration.

Bill Gattle, president of Harris’ space and intelligence systems business, said HSAT can launch with other satellites as a “rideshare” aboard one rocket.

“It can then be reconfigured in space – enabling customers to upgrade or reprogram the application on orbit.”

The company will manage its satellite via a facility located in Palm Bay, Fla.

Harris noted it adapts sensor, payload, satellite ground and data analytics platforms for smallsats in an effort to support clients that perform critical missions.
