VMware Plans Community Microgrid Development Project - top government contractors - best government contracting eventVMware plans to build a microgrid at the company’s headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif., and test the system’s potential to generate renewable energy for the public and private sectors.

The project will aim to provide necessary resources to facilitate emergency response operations in the area in the event of a power and fuel shortage, VMware said Thursday.

The company aims to mature a proof of concept to a campus-level community microgrid intended to support renewable power, battery storage and additional controls to the city’s utilities department.

The microgrid will be operated remotely to serve as a backup system when a larger power grid fails to work.

VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said the company will work to power all of its global operations with renewable energy by 2020 as part of its Global Impact goals.

He added the company foresees the deployment increase of renewable energy to responsive and secure smart electrical grids in the future.

The firm expects the project to facilitate local solar generation, greenhouse gas emissions reduction and backup power utilization.
