Serco Inc., the British contractor’s North American arm, has processed 4M patent applications for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The company said Thursday its intellectual property team has helped USPTO analyze drawings, specifications and claims from applicants, as well as assign domestic and international classification symbols representative of invention proposals since 2006.

To date, Serco personnel have examined more than 56M claims and assigned more than 18M classification symbols with a quality measure exceeding 95 percent.

The company implemented artificial intelligence and automated tools to help the simplify the agency’s patent classification decision process.

“We take great pride in the work our team does for the USPTO because it promotes U.S. innovation and assists the USPTO in achieving their mission of providing timely and high quality protections to U.S. inventors,” said Tom Watson, senior vice president of Serco Inc.’s federal services business.

The IP team previously helped the office transition a classification framework to the Cooperative Patent Classification system as part of the agency’s joint effort with its European counterpart in 2010.
