Oak Ridge National Lab Seeks Commercial Partner for Cybersecurity Tool - top government contractors - best government contracting eventThe Energy Department‘s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee has launched a competitive process for interested vendors to apply for licensing rights to commercialize a patented malware detection tool, Bloomberg Government reported Friday.

ORNL seeks an industry partner to market the Heartbeat technology designed to trace malicious codes through a device’s energy usage.

“Malware tries to hide itself, and that causes it to spend time and energy in a way that nothing else on your computer does,” said Stacey Powell, head of ORNL’s computing and computational sciences directorate.

Powell added the prototype has potential to secure industrial control systems that supports critical infrastructure assets.

Heartbeat is one of the six platforms designated as “market-ready” under the lab’s Technology Innovation Program, which offers up to nine months of additional funds to help developers further develop platforms.

ORNL will accept responses to the solicitation and commercialization plans through Jan. 6.
