The U.S. Navy will hold a commissioning ceremony for the future USS Sioux City, built by a Lockheed MartinFincantieri Marinette Marine alliance, on Saturday at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.

The littoral combat ship is the sixth of the Freedom-variant vessels and the 13th LCS to join the Navy’s fleet, the service branch said Wednesday.

LCS 11 will be homeported at the Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Fla., following the event.

Attendees will include Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, and Mary Winnefeld, wife of former Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman James Winnefeld.

USS Sioux City is named after Iowa’s fourth-largest city that was founded in 1854.

Littoral combat ships are intended for operations in near-shore environments as well as open-ocean missions to thwart threats including submarines, mines and swarming small craft.
