Carahsoft Technology has partnered with Google to provide cloud services to help the National Institutes of Health address data storage requirements for agency-funded research projects.
The partnership aims to help researchers manage biomedical data and computing functions through Google Cloud as part of the NIH’s Science and Technology Research Infrastructure for Discovery, Experimentation and Sustainability program, Carahsoft said Thursday.
The Reston, Va.-based company noted the growing amount of publicly available studies stored in local institutions and repositories have made it difficult for researchers to evaluate and exchange information from biomedical data sets.
NIH institutes and centers support more than 2.5K academic and research entities.
Terry Drinkwine, vice president of the Google Cloud team at Carahsoft, said the company’s contributions to the NIH STRIDES initiative will support research institutions and the NIH in efforts to “enhance health, lengthen life and reduce illness and disability.”
The agency plans to reach out to the research community to establish regulations on the cloud implementation effort.
Google’s cloud service is the first of its kind to take part in the STRIDES program.
