A joint venture of Boeing and Safran has received clearances from regulators to kick off design, development and servicing work on onboard engines built to power aircraft while on the ground.

Etienne Boisseau will serve as CEO of the new JV that will design auxiliary power units in San Diego, Boeing said Friday.

“This joint venture strengthens Boeing’s vertical capabilities as we continue to expand our services portfolio,” said Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing’s global services business.

Other executives nominated to the JV’s leadership team include Linda Hapgood as chief operating officer; Joan Inlow as chief technology officer; and Erin Morrissey as chief financial officer.

Boeing will combine its aircraft and client knowledge with Safran’s propulsion systems production experience to design and build APUs through the JV, in which both companies will own a 50 percent stake.

Boeing announced the formation of the new APU-focused JV with French aerospace firm Safran in June.
