Army Finds New Energy Source Tech Platforms Through Prize Competition - top government contractors - best government contracting eventThe U.S. Army has identified two potential sources of power for military operations through a recent competition among technology startup businesses, National Defense Magazine reported Tuesday.

The military service sponsored the xTechSearch contest as the branch sought to discover new technology platforms that can address its modernization goals.

Emerville, Calif.-based Cuberg was one of the 12 contest winners for developing an ultra-lightweight rechargeable battery that uses an electrolyte formula to increase energy density and maintain thermal stability.

Cambridge, Mass.-based Mesodyne showcased its portable power generator that works to convert fuel to electricity via a thermophotovoltaic method.

XTechSearch finalists received $125K each and will aim to demonstrate proof-of-concepts in the coming months prior to the competition’s final event scheduled for April.
