Oshkosh’s defense business will begin to install by-wire active safety kit on 60 of the U.S. Army’s Palletized Load System vehicles in early 2019 under the service’s Expedient Leader Follower program. C4ISRNET reported Monday.
The company aims to complete the installation on time to allow the federal government to perform an operational task demonstration of the vehicles in 2020.
The kit is designed to support modern vehicle functions such as forward-collision, lane-departure and back up warning, lane centering, pedestrian detection and sign recognition.
Oshkosh will integrate the technology with the PLS truck’s engine, transmission, brakes and steering device.
The project is part of a $49M contract that the Wisconsin-based company received from the service in June to install an autonomous system on resupply and distribution vehicles with the goal to reduce the number of drivers in a convoy.
