The Transportation Department is requesting public input on a guidance document for the development, assessment and production of driverless vehicles.
DOT said Thursday its new guide, titled “Automated Vehicles 3.0: Preparing for the Future of Transportation,” suggests a multimodal approach to automate motor vehicles and integrate the platforms on roadways.
The approach is based on principles such as focusing on safety, maintaining technology neutrality, updating policy, promoting a standard regulatory platform, investing on advancements in automation and safeguarding citizens’ rights.
“The integration of automation has the potential to increase productivity and facilitate freight movement,†Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said.
“But most importantly, automation has the potential to impact safety significantly – by reducing crashes caused by human error, including crashes involving impaired or distracted drivers,†Chao added.
