The U.S. Navy has tapped Aviat Networks for two projects related to microwave technology that will help the service branch refine communication networks at its training bases.
The projects will enable personnel to exchange critical information without having to rely on leased services such as fiber-based communication lines, which are less able to support high-speed data and video-based communications, Aviat said Friday.
The Santa Clara, Calif.-based firm also noted that its microwave-based communications infrastructure do not depend on a third party for repair work, enabling agencies to recover from network failures faster.
Aviat will provide microwave communications systems to Navy pilots and other users at a western region naval training base as part of the first project, while the second effort involves the deployment of microwave radios throughout tactical training ranges to be used by fleet training personnel.
Aviat CEO and President Michael Pangia said critical communications systems like the Navy’s must be highly reliable while supporting next-generation video-based applications.
The company’s microwave radios are currently being used by federal agencies such as the departments of Defense, Energy and Homeland Security.
