The U.S. Army has qualified BAE Systems’ Bofors 155mm BONUS munition for inclusion in its weapons arsenal and is purchasing rounds under an agreement with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency.
Each BONUS round contains two sub-munitions that use sensors to independently track and chase targets within a 32K-square-meter radius, BAE said Tuesday.
The munition is designed for use with 155mm guns such as M777 and M109 howitzers.
“The Army is now joining a number of international counterparts deploying this munition, ” said Lena Gillstrom, managing director of BAE’s Sweden-based weapon systems business.
The company will perform deliveries of the rounds through 2020.
BAE and France-based Nexter worked together to develop and manufacture the BONUS round now used by the armed forces of Finland, France, Norway and Sweden.
