Alion Science and Technology has secured a spot on a potential $794M  contract to develop and advance unmanned undersea vehicles for the U.S. Navy.

The McLean, Va.-based company said Wednesday it will supply the service’s UUV family with rapid prototype material technologies related to the products, ancillary and peculiar support equipment.

Alion will also contribute to the modernization of existing and future UUV systems and subsystems.

The Navy will use the UUVs for search missions, detection and classification, weapon targeting and placement, undersea warfare training, and communications and mapping, among other things.

Vince Stammetti, senior vice president of Alion’s systems solutions business unit, said deploying unmanned vehicles with surveillance and threat detecting sensors will allow host platforms to make sound decisions without putting fleet personnel in undue harm.

The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division obtained 28 offers and selected 23 companies to compete for task orders under the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract.
