KBR’s government services arm has earned NASA’s nod as one of 13 contract awardees who will conduct research on potential commercial opportunities in low-Earth orbit.
The contract tasks KBRwyle to develop strategies on how to provide affordable LEO-related technology and encourage commercial and government use of systems designed for LEO, KBR said Monday.
The company is additionally required to assess the future of the LEO industry as well as the feasibility of habitable platforms such as the International Space Station and other free-flying structures.
NASA will use KBR’s recommendations on how the government and ISS can help catalyze the LEO market and expand LEO access to help grow the American space industry.
Byron Bright, president of KBR Government Services U.S., said that KBR has been at the forefront of U.S. space exploration for five decades.
He added that the company is looking forward to providing input that can “profoundly impact the future of space exploration and shape tomorrow’s space economy.”
KBRwyle has supported U.S. space programs including ISS operations since 1968.
