Marillyn Hewson, chairman, president and CEO of Lockheed Martin, took the top spot on Fortune Magazine’s annual list of most powerful women in business.

She discussed the Bethesda, Md.-based company’s efforts to help U.S. government customers develop technology platforms for national security missions in an interview published Monday on Fortune.com.

“We expect the governments we do business for are going to be doing things that are appropriate. And I am confident that we are working on the right things to keep this nation safe,” Hewson told the publication.

She noted that the aerospace and defense contractor is developing hypersonic weapons, hit-to-kill missile and autonomous systems.

Hewson also emphasized the importance of advancing the country’s technological superiority across the air, land, space and cyber domains as the scale of threats accelerates.

Lockheed, the prime contractor on the F-35 fighter aircraft program, has won government contracts worth more than $1B so far this year and Fortune estimated that the company’s market capitalization value is approximately $100B.
