General Dynamics Updates MUOS Satellite Waveform for Navy Digital Radios; Carlo Zaffanella Comments

General Dynamics has updated and tested the Mobile User Objective System‘s waveform technology built to support software-based radios of the U.S. Navy. 

The company said Monday MUOS WFv3.1.5 is designed to help Navy personnel transmit voice, data and video communications via the military satellite communications network when they perform onshore and offshore missions.

“There are more than 700 DMRs in the Navy’s radio inventory, it is one of the largest numbers of fielded, tactical radios capable of connecting to the MUOS network,” said Carol Real, a director of General Dynamics Mission Systems.

The multichannel technology connects to multiple tactical radios simultaneously and works to secure information.

“We work closely with our Navy partners, enhancing and improving DMR as it supports the global spectrum of Navy fleet, joint and coalition operations,” Carlo Zaffanella, a vice president and general manager of GDMS, told ExecutiveBiz.

“With the improved MUOS waveform, DMR will provide unprecedented access to the MUOS satellite network,” Zaffanella added.

The first MUOS satellite was launched in 2012 and helps users transfer data 10 times faster than legacy satcom radios, the company noted.
