General Dynamics‘ Electric Boat subsidiary delivered the future USS South Dakota, or SSN 790, to the U.S. Navy on Monday.
With the delivery completed, the Navy is set to commission the 17th Virginia-class attack submarine in early 2019, the Naval Sea Systems Command said Tuesday.
The submarine is also the seventh in its class to employ the Block III configuration that features two large-diameter payload tubes designed to launch six Tomahawk missiles each.
Electric Boat is also working on a multi-million-dollar contract to develop insertion prototype materials for SSN 790 and install payloads into Virginia-class submarines.
