Lockheed Martin has awarded Cubic’s global defense segment a contract of an undisclosed value to build an air combat training system for the F-35 Lightning II program.

Cubic said Thursday it will deliver more than 500 ACTS subsystems over the next four years as part of F-35 production lots 12 to 14.

The system will incorporate the P5 ground software and the airborne P5 Combat Training System Internal Subsystem configuration designed to support exchange of time, space and position data between aircraft flight training.

“Fifth-generation aircrew require a complex training scenario to prepare them for combat operations in a contested environment,” said Dave Buss, president of Cubic Global Defense.

Buss added the training system will help fighter pilots train with fourth-generation aircraft that employ P5CTS’  wing-mounted pod variant and gather exercise data.

P5CTS is designed to facilitate real-time, live monitoring and mission data recording of air-to-air, air-to-ground and surface-to-air flights for post-mission training assessment.

Cubic partnered with Leonardo DRS to manufacture and sustain embedded airborne technology for the F-35 internal training subsystem.

Engineering of ground systems will occur in San Diego and work on airborne systems will take place in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
