The Federal Aviation Administration has announced plans to recategorize from “moderate†to “high†level its enterprise information technology network under the Federal Information Security Management Act, FCW reported Monday.
The move to update the FISMA categorization of the FAA Enterprise Network Services program is part of the agency’s efforts to modernize its air traffic control system.
FAA posted on FedBizOpps several documents with regard to its June meeting with 14 technology firms over the FENS program.
The report said the agency has initiated the acquisition planning stage for FENS with a plan to launch a competitive procurement for the program to facilitate the delivery of data services, communications support and networking capabilities to the National Airspace System.
Steve Cooper, chief information officer at FAA, said the agency is eyeing the potential use of FENS to support some applications and infrastructure on NAS, a closed platform that is not linked to the internet.
“Then it would have to be FISMA high,” Cooper added.
