The Office of Naval Research, Naval Research Laboratory and Carnegie Mellon University have partnered to boost interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and artificial intelligence studies for the U.S. Navy.
NRL said Thursday the three entities will educate CMU students on the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief-related aspects of AI under the five-year Education Partnership Agreement.
The effort will help ONR and NRL to expand their knowledge in STEM and AI through the academic community and accelerate developments in AI and autonomous capabilities to support HA/DR operations, among other things.
NRL Commanding Officer Capt. Scott Moran said EPA will allow CMU students and faculty to leverage NRL resources to develop and deploy technology that will meet the needs of the Navy.
“This agreement builds a foundation for expanded collaborations between NRL and CMU, especially in the rapidly developing discipline of [AI],†he added.
