The National Center for Manufacturing Sciences will establish a new facility in Harford City, Md. that will host industrial additive manufacturing lines, National Defense Magazine reported Monday.
The organization is coordinating with public and private organizations such as Johns Hopkins University, University of Maryland, University of Delaware, Northrop Grumman, 3D Systems and the Army Research Laboratory, among others, to construct the additive manufacturing facility.
Rick Jarman, president and CEO of NCMS, noted that the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy have already expressed their intent to have the 3D printing facility work to produce military systems that will boost performance and efficiency and streamline assembly lines.
Jarman added that establishing the center will possibly generate new jobs, increase the state’s economic growth and enable firms from non-traditional organizations to showcase their potential in 3D printing, as well as collaborate with bigger companies.
NCMS will hold a ceremony for the construction of the additive manufacturing site on Oct. 10 in Aberdeen, home of the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command.
