Mitch Stevison, vice president of air and missile defense systems at Raytheon, said at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium he believes leadership in the government and industry amid the rapid growth of technology is key to U.S. defense missions.

He made the statement during a panel discussion that tackled evolving space and missile threats, technology acquisition and collaboration among western allies to counter adversaries, Raytheon said Friday.

“We continue to sometimes defeat our own selves by finding every little reason why something isn’t perfect, and if we do that, we’re going to watch our main adversaries continue to move ahead of us in key areas that we will be reactive to,” Stevison told event audience.

Other panelists included Richard Yu, director of the U.S. Army’s Capability Development Integration Directorate; retired Army Lt. Gen. David Mann, former commander of the Space and Missile Defense Command; and Col. Francisco Lozano, project manager of the Army’s Lower Tier Project Office within the Program Executive Office Missiles and Space.

The symposium took place from Aug. 7 to 9 in Huntsville, Ala.
