Lockheed Martin and AECOM have jointly started developing a battery energy storage system under an energy savings performance contract to help Fort Carson in Colorado reduce expenses for energy consumption.

AECOM said Tuesday the BESS offering will include Lockheed’s GridStar Lithium energy storage system and Geli’s predictive analysis control software. AECOM will provide development and integration services.

The BESS is expected to help Fort Carson reduce electricity costs, boost renewable energy and provide frequency, voltage and microgrid support for the military base’s distribution grid.

It runs behind Fort Carson’s energy utility meter.

John Battaglini, director of business development, marketing and sales at Lockheed Martin Energy, said the versatility of energy storage systems will enable the U.S. military to meet its energy resiliency goals.
