The Virginia Department of Transportation has selected Dewberry to support a $252 million effort that would expand the width of the state’s Route 7 by two lanes.
The company said Tuesday it is partnering with Shirley Contracting Company to widen the route into a six-lane highway connecting Reston Avenue to Jarrett Valley Drive, under the Route 7 Corridor Improvement project.
The effort would also establish a new pedestrian tunnel beneath the route, modify turn lanes, install multiple noise barriers, incorporate pedestrian facilities along both sides of the route and replace the existing Route 7 bridge over Difficult Run.
Design services under the effort would cover the aspects of roadway geometry, hydraulic and stormwater management, structure and traffic control.
Work begins this month and will continue through August 2024.
Additionally, Dewberry and Shirley Contracting will coordinate the project with a separate $200 million effort that aims to upgrade the Washington Gas transmission line.
