H.R. McMaster, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general and former national security adviser, will return to Stanford University’s Hoover Institution in September as a Fouad and Michelle Ajami senior fellow.

McMaster, who previously taught at the institution as a National Security Affairs Fellow from 2002 to 2003 and as a Visiting Fellow from 2003 to 2017, plans to teach about leadership essentials, stimulate interest in history as a means to appreciate security challenges in the present as well as in the future, and conduct research into grand strategy and the advancement of U.S. interests, the public policy think tank announced Monday.

“Hoover’s mission to advance the policy ideas that promote peace, prosperity and freedom is vital and I will do all I can to contribute to that mission,” the former U.S. Army officer said.

McMaster, who has also been named Bernard and Susan Liautaud Visiting Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and appointed lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, served in the military for more than three decades before retiring this June.
