Dwight Hunsicker, executive vice president and general manager of Globecomm’s government solutions business, has said the combination of satellite communications-on-the move and communications-on-the-move platforms could help meet the data and intelligence needs of deployed warfighters.

Hunsicker wrote in an article for MilSatMagazine that satellite network technology platforms work to provide U.S. government clients with broadband connectivity services and related capabilities “anywhere in the world in a highly secure and resilient manner.”

He cited the role of the Fixed Satellite System as a gateway to connect data centers that work to support network management and enumerated the advantages of very small aperture terminals, including the technology’s capability to provide a wireless link that can support disaster recovery and command-and-control operations.

He noted about the Mobile Satellite System interface’s capability to provide the “dual-mode connectivity that supports coverage gaps that are a part of the cellular infrastructure” and discussed the satellite types that will work to meet use cases across ground, sea and air: low-Earth orbit, medium-Earth orbit and geostationary satellites.

Hunsicker also mentioned the benefits of adopting high-throughput satellites and those include higher bandwidth, network management and flexibility.

“HTS systems combine the exceptional spectrum efficiency and performance of spot-beam antennas with ultra-wideband transponders to enable unprecedented levels of bandwidth and throughput,” he added.
