The U.S. Navy‘s 2018 Advanced Naval Technology Exercise will explore the potential of autonomous underwater systems for human-machine interaction, USNI News reported Tuesday.
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport in Rhode Island will facilitate the event and enable participants to showcase their unmanned systems, as well as help the Navy assess technological potentials in artificial intelligence, machine learning and autonomy.
“[We are] looking at technologies that can enable or achieve human trust in machine to support tactical and operational decision needs,†said Peter Hardro, ANTX director at NUWD Newport.
Hardo added the Navy is interested in how humans can interact with autonomous systems in detecting, localizing, tracking or targeting objects underwater.
NUWD Newport will conduct an initial support testing of technologies in late July before launching the main event at the Narragansett Bay Test Facility in late August.
One of the technologies presented will be Aquabotix’s SwarmDiver, which is programmed to dive as deep as 50 yards and operate in coordination with other unmanned underwater vehicles.
