Huntington Ingalls Industries‘ Newport News Shipbuilding division has delivered a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine slated for U.S. Navy commissioning in September.
USS Indiana is the 16th Virginia-class submarine HII has built through a partnership with General Dynamics‘ Electric Boat subsidiary and eighth craft that Newport News Shipbuilding handed over to the service branch, HIIÂ said Monday.
The industry team began the construction project in September 2012 and concluded sea trials earlier this month for the vessel designated as SSN 789.
Dave Bolcar, vice president of submarine construction at Newport News, said nearly 4,000 workers helped build the future Indiana submarine.
