Globecomm has entered into an agreement with Iridium Communications to serve as one of the first maritime distribution partners for Iridium Certus, a new L-band broadband service that uses the Virginia-based firm’s NEXT satellite constellation.
Globecomm said in a statement that the agreement allows the company to offer shipowners and operators a broader range of connectivity solutions, with Iridium Certus set to become what Globecomm Maritime President Malcolm McMaster called “a key offering” for the company’s clients.
Iridium Certus is still going through a live testing phase, but once commercially available, the L-band service is expected to deliver throughput speeds of up to 352 Kbps at launch, which can be upgraded to 704 Kbps.
The service is expected to eventually deliver speeds of up to 1.4 Mbps.
