The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has selected BAE Systems to develop a software platform for U.S. military planners to understand and address the causes of a conflict in various missions.
BAE said Monday it will create the Causal Modeling for Knowledge Transfer, Exploration and Temporal Simulation platform through a $4.2 million contract from the Air Force Research Laboratory under the first phase of DARPA’s Causal Exploration of Complex Operational Environments program.
The software is intended to help users study economic, political and territorial factors that can drive conflicts.
“CONTEXTS will use reasoning algorithms and simulations with the goal to give planners a quicker and deeper understanding of conflicts to help avoid unexpected and counterintuitive outcomes,” said Chris Eisenbies, product line director at BAE Systems’ autonomy, controls and estimation group.
David Danks, a professor and head at Carnegie Mellon University’s department of philosophy, will serve as a teammate on the project.
Work will take place at BAE’s facilities in Arlington, Va., and Burlington, Mass.
