AWS Introduces New Apps to GovCloud; Teresa Carlson Comments

Amazon Web Services has unveiled new applications on the GovCloud platform that works to host sensitive workloads and data in compliance with the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program and other security regulations, GCN reported Friday.

Teresa Carlson, vice president of worldwide public sector at AWS, introduced at the AWS Public Sector Summit those services including Amazon Inspector, Amazon Aurora and Amazon Translate.

Amazon Inspector is an on-demand security evaluation service designed to build up the security of the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud platform.

“Inspector makes it simpler to automate your FedRAMP and [Defense Department] security compliance by automatically assessing and checking for vulnerabilities and deviations in best practices from those architectures,” added Carlson, a four-time Wash100 winner.

Amazon Aurora is relational software-as-a-service database platform, while Amazon Translate uses deep-learning models to speed up translation of texts in various languages.

VMware and AWS also launched a hybrid cloud service – VMware Cloud on AWS GovCloud (US) – designed to help government agencies accelerate migration of applications to the cloud and securely manage workloads through a common infrastructure.

In a separate interview with Washington Business Journal, Carlson said she believes using a single-award contract would be a “good choice” for the Defense Department to procure a cloud-based Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure.

“I’m hoping the DOD can get moving on this and roll it out because it’s really important for them for the warfighter,” she told the publication.
