U.S. Congress has complied with the Trump administration’s request to move forward with a review of the proposed sale of more than 120,000 precision-guided weapons to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Reuters reported Wednesday.
The report said the administration has pushed for increased arms exports as part of efforts toward U.S. job growth, and it has approved the sale of $7 billion in precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia in 2017.
President Donald Trump asked Saudi Arabia earlier this year to purchase more American weapon systems in an effort to open additional jobs in the U.S.
The Middle Eastern country expressed interest in buying 153 M1A1/A2 Abrams battle tanks and related equipment from General Dynamics, as well as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system launchers and interceptor missiles from Lockheed Martin and Raytheon.
Sources have confirmed the 40-day evaluation period ahead of possible sales is underway, Reuters reported.
